Step Inside: a historic home in Hudson, NY

A Q&A with our mysterious HNY muse—step inside a historic home in Hudson, New York full of inspiring + unexpected design details.

What drew you first to the historic homes of Hudson, New York?

There's a certain charm and character to these homes that you just can't find anywhere else. Each one tells a story, weaving together the past and the present in a seamless tapestry of history and design. I'm drawn to the sense of authenticity and timelessness that permeates these spaces.

Tell us a bit about the Hudson home.

The Hudson house is an 18th century farmhouse built in the 1750s by Dutch settlers. When I moved in, it was in bad shape. I knew I wanted to restore it while preserving the design legacy of the space.

How would you describe your interior aesthetic?

Simple, organic, texture-rich.

Could you walk us through your creative process when it came to designing the house?

For the house, I found inspiration in clean lines, uncluttered spaces, and the subtle interplay of light and shadow. There was a constant tension of refinement and restraint, and I wanted to allow the inherent beauty of the space to lead the interior aesthetic.

What are some of your favorite design details of the house?

From the original architectural details to the layout and flow of each room, there are so many one-of-a-kind details that add to its charm. I find myself continuously enamored by the juxtaposition of old and new, traditional and modern, and I strive to infuse that same sense of balance and harmony into my own work as a photographer.

Our surroundings often influence us. To you, what role does the environment play in shaping your creative vision + values?

Values of beauty resonate deeply with me, and it serves as a constant source of inspiration in my creative journey. Whether I'm designing a new collection, styling a photo shoot, or simply decorating my own home, form is always at the forefront of my mind. That said, the objects I surround myself with often sway and steer my vision by providing a thriving, creative environment.

What are you currently inspired by?

At the moment, I'm drawn to the beauty of simplicity. There's something incredibly captivating about stripping away the excess and focusing on the essential elements. It goes beyond aesthetics and has become a way of life for me.

On a more tangible note, the works of Joan Didion always inspire me. Her ability to capture the essence of a moment through keen observations of society serve as a constant source of truth + guiding light.

Last but not least, what advice would you give to those designing their own home?

My advice would be to stay curious, stay open-minded, and never be afraid to follow your instincts. Inspiration can be found everywhere, from the grandest of landscapes to the smallest of details, so don't limit yourself by what you think you should be inspired by. Embrace the unexpected and let your creativity take the lead.
